The AVP (Apple Vision Pro) is a VR (Virtual Reality) device that differentiates itself on several points. Spatial computing is a term for computing done in the real world instead of on a screen. In short, it means computers accommodating humans and how they interact instead of the other way around.

Embodying the idea of human-centric design

”Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality are both forms of spatial computing.  With the Apple Vision Pro, the real world is captured by high-definition cameras and then relayed to you via high-definition screens, with some changes made in the middle,” explains Scott Leaman, Mixed Reality Lead at Sopra Steria. 

“Digital screens, digital objects, or a complete virtual world can all be inserted into this stream, giving the user an impression of interacting with digital objects as if they are there in real life. High-speed cameras track what your eyes are looking at and let you select those objects by tapping your fingers together.”

From Virtual Reality to Spatial Computing

Jelmer Verhoog, Mixed Reality Manager, comments: “With Apple entering this market means that it has reached a level of maturity. You can also see it when you check out augmented reality (AR) on the Gartner Hype Cycle. AR actually already left the whole hype cycle back in 2019. So all in all, mixed reality, or spatial computing as Apple now calls it, is no longer an emerging technology, but it’s something that is safe to invest in to improve and innovate businesses.”

The Apple Vision Pro is not the first time that Sopra Steria and EGGS have received ground-breaking new technology before it has become widespread on the market. A few years ago, Sopra Steria was first out getting their hands on the HoloLens, eventually resulting in the 

“Emerging and new tech can often serve as great inspiration for both service, business, and product innovation. It's not the technology itself that drives innovation, but it can be an essential enabler. The AVP is being pushed as a personal device, but there’s great potential for it to be used in industrial and professional training, for example,” comments Scott Leaman.

“It will be interesting to explore how the Apple Vision Pro can be used in our work with clients and in explorative phases of innovation projects. Of course, there’s also the obvious possibility of using it as a classic collaboration and information tool.”, continues Jarl Cedergren. It’s a smooth way to see things in 3D, to review design work, showcase prototypes and design.”
