To ensure more engagement and inclusive representation in their material, Save the Children sought captivating illustrations for their interactive learning resource, "The Magical Classroom." The tool is aims to educate 10-15-year-olds on climate and environment, emphasising indigenous communities, particularly those with Sami backgrounds. 

The challenge involved crafting 30 illustrations showcasing children and animals, serving as gateways to tasks, films, games, and quizzes. Additionally, backgrounds for each theme, icons, and gaming elements were illustrated, emphasizing diversity, specifically highlighting Sami children. Collaboration with an expert in Sami culture ensured the accuracy and cultural sensitivity of the illustrations, fostering engagement with climate challenges.

Capturing diversity in educational tools

By creating new visuals that celebrated indigenous children and those engaged in environmental issues, we could give new life to “The Magical Classroom”. We gave the platform's homepage an enticing visual update with new clickable illustrations, invoking children's curiosity. For each learning theme, we designed bespoke backgrounds, and an overarching poster featuring all UN Sustainable Development Goals, which was interwoven with the illustrations.

A culturally sensitive, inclusive, and engaging illustrated tool

The close collaboration resulted in an inclusive visual landscape for Save the Children’s educational platform, ensuring a special focus on indigenous (Sami) children and environmental consciousness. The design invites children to explore, and the distinct backgrounds for each learning theme facilitates the learning. The illustrations, including the overarching poster, are adaptable for digital and print mediums, and helps foster cultural sensitivity, representation and inclusion.
