Efficient power grid data analysis to enable increasing electrification
Design and development of the digital tool TNT

Power grid structures generate immense amounts of data. To liberate the data and ensure that it is utilised effectively, the Norwegian power system operator Statnett needed a better tool. The solution—TNT—enables a huge increase in speed when navigating complex power grid structures and large amounts of data from multiple sources. Utilising Cognite's data platform CDF, EGGS has helped develop the new software, from early ideation to design and implementation.

The challenge
Accessing and analysing power grid data to meet growing electricity demand
The green shift and electrification have increased the demand for capacity in the Norwegian power grid. Statnett, which owns and operates the transmission grid, is tasked with managing the great growth in demand and developing infrastructure to support it.
To provide the knowledge needed efficiently, Statnett analysts need a tool to help them quickly and effectively access and analyse grid data. Cognite provided a modern data platform to liberate the data, but the user interface was not sufficiently tailored to the Statnett analysts’ needs. EGGS worked closely with Statnett to define the end users needs and design a brand new solution.
“EGGS has helped us create a tool that the users love and has been crucial for finding creative solutions to meet the immense demand for more grid capacity.”

The outcome
A digital data analytics tool
Through over four years of close collaboration with Cognite and Statnett, we designed TNT. This advanced digital tool allows analysts in Statnett to navigate, access, and make calculations when planning the development of the Norwegian power grid. TNT is a custom frontend application that runs locally in Statnett’s systems, presenting data from Cognite’s data platform. EGGS has collaborated with , digital design, and service design.
The product started as part of an R&D program, where a part goal was to get Statnett started working in an agile, product-oriented manner. As the product matured, it moved into Statnett's portfolio of custom software, and the number of users keeps growing steadily.
Delivered value
Quicker data analysis enables a reliable power supply
Thanks to its design, TNT contextualises Statnett’s data and gives quick access to historical data. The tool cuts the time needed to extract data required for analysis dramatically. Some analysts point out that they frequently use the application in meetings to extract data as part of a discussion instead of returning to the question days later.
Moreover, the tool has now become a general application, as it has started to be used by other Statnett professionals in several other sections in addition to the analysts it set out to help.
By quickly accessing and analysing power grid data, analysts and planners in Statnett are able to better keep up with the increasing number of applications for connections, and adjust plans for daily operations, providing a reliable power supply at all times.
Last but not least, the project has enabled Statnett to learn new ways of working with projects. As a technically oriented organisation, they have traditionally worked with classic waterfall project management. The TNT project was an early example that has beed used to show the benefits of opening up to new ways of working iteratively and user-centeredly using agile methods.
